Common Buckeyes are native, beneficial pollinators throughout the region. The caterpillars specialize in feeding on plants rich in bitter compounds called iridoid glycosides (such as false foxglove, plantains, and snapdragons), which they store in their bodies to deter predators like ants and birds.
